ISLAMABAD: US Congresswoman Ilhan Abdullah Omar is due to arrive in Islamabad today (Tuesday), with a trip to Azad Kashmir being the centrepiece of her visit, according to Geo News.

According to The News, a top official at the Foreign Office confirmed the visit, despite the fact that neither side has made an official statement.

According to rumours, Omar would meet with Pakistan's top officials and travel to Azad Kashmir.
Omar, 37, is a Democrat who represents Minnesota in Congress, and she is one of just two Muslim women elected to the US Congress in 2018.

She has consistently expressed her support for Kashmiris in Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir. Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's annexation of Kashmir in 2019, Omer called for an immediate resumption of communication, as well as respect for human rights, democratic norms, and religious freedom, as well as de-escalation in Kashmir, saying that international organisations should be allowed to fully document what is happening on the ground.

Who is Ilhan Omar?

In the US House of Representatives, Omar represents Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, which covers Minneapolis and its suburbs.

Omar, a policy analyst, organiser, public speaker, and advocate with extensive experience in the Twin Cities, was sworn into office in January 2019, making her the first African refugee to be elected to Congress, the first woman of colour to represent Minnesota, and one of only two Muslim-American women elected to Congress.
She and her family escaped Somalia's civil war when she was eight years old. Before moving to the United States in the 1990s, the family spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp. Her family relocated to Minneapolis in 1997. Omar's grandfather encouraged her to get active in politics when she was a youngster. She worked as a community educator at the University of Minnesota, a Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and a Senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council before running for office.

She was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 60B in 2016, making her the first Somali-American State Legislator and the highest-elected Somali-American public official in the United States.Rep. Omar was appointed to three house committees: Civil Law and Data Practices Policy, Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance, and State Government Finance.
